Club Med's Membership Contest
The dynamic duo of Terri and Cindy, as membership
and public relations chairmen, were charged with developing a contest to
increase the membership of Club Med for the 2004-2005 club year. Our goal was to
add ten new members to the club during the five weeks of the contest.
We wanted to create the contest around three
concepts:
visual interest and stimulation,
pride in the club
a sense of fun.
We purchased a two-fold, three panel display board for a visual presentation. We wanted pictorials to represent a play on the name of the club - Club Med - and decided on the term Exotic Club Med. A picture of a palm tree was the central visual.
On the left side of the board, we had paper monkeys numbered from 1-10. When a new member joined, one of the monkeys moved to the palm tree and was replaced with a banana with the new member's name. The right side of the board featured the current member's names. A sticker was placed by their name when they brought a guest. At the end of the contest, the member with the most stickers won a prize of a restaurant gift certificate and two speech crafting books .
In addition, each week we awarded the person who had made a special effort to reach potential members with the coveted pink flamingo award (a pen). This award, while slightly silly and definitely fun, became a real goal for several members partly because of the limited number to be given. Winners included one member who wrote and sent an article about the club to her employer's in-house newsletter. Another developed and distributed "invitation to visit" cards for members to give out. During this weekly "ceremony," members were encouraged to share ideas for reaching potential members.
